Flowers in your life...

There are so many things that can be done to make a gathering of friends special. If you are going to take the time and effort to entertain you should go that added step to pay attention to small details that will let people know that you care about them and welcome them into your home. Small details do not have to take a great deal of time, and they can mean a great deal to others.

One detail that marks any event as special is fresh flowers. You can find more info about flowers with florida plant identification app. Most grocery stores now carry fresh cash and carry bouquets in the produce section. These flowers are usually inexpensive and fresh. You are in the grocery store anyway to buy ingredients for your meal so there are no additional errands to run. As soon as you get the flowers home make sure you put them in water until you have time to arrange them. The nice thing about using cut flowers for flower centerpieces is that you can use your own containers and vases. The stems of the flowers are usually all one length and quite long. To start simply clip the ends off of the stems and place them in the container at different heights to create your flower centerpieces. I usually buy enough flowers to make two flower centerpieces, one for the table and one for the coffee table. If your budget does not allow for this simply move the flowers into the living room when you are finished eating.

One of the biggest mistakes people make when creating flower centerpieces is that they make them too high for guest to visit across the table. The table decorations should never impede the flow of conversation. If one of your guests has given you a vase, use it to arrange the flowers. Remember that flower centerpieces do not have to be arranged in vases. Be creative in what you arrange the flowers in. I use flower frogs, which are round metal or glass discs that have holes in them to stick flower stems into. They can convert any bowl into a flower container. If your do not have a frog you can use florist foam which comes in large pieces that you cut to the size you need. You wet the foam to make it pliable and also to keep the flowers wet. Using bowls to make flower centerpieces is a way to keep the arrangement low to the surface. Also because you are cutting the stems short you can use mums, daisies and mini carnations. They are usually inexpensive and there are multiple blooms on one stem. The simple touch of arranging your own flower centerpieces will show your guests how much you care and will only cost a small amount.

I was what you would call an armchair gardener. It's not that I didn't have the drive. When I lived in my parents house during my teenage years, I used to have a flower and garden area that would rock your world. I grew some of the freshest tomatoes and some of the most beautiful daisies that you have ever seen. It's just that, living in a small New York City apartment, I had almost no room at all for my possessions. Growing anything was unthinkable.

Everything changed when I moved to San Francisco. I went to a SF flower and garden show, and was blown away by what I saw. You see, San Francisco has a unique climate. Practically anything that can grow can grow there. It is bright enough for plants that need a lot of sunlight, yet there is enough precipitation for plants that need a lot of moisture. It is not too hot, and it is not too cold. It stays almost the same temperature all year. In short, it is the perfect moderate environment.

Because of that, San Francisco flower and garden shows are known the world over. They have some of the best and brightest flowers, the freshest fruits and vegetables, and the most impressive gourds that you have ever seen. Every garden and flower magazine profiles them each year, and each year is better than the last. When you go to the flower and garden show in San Francisco, is almost impossible to not become obsessed with the idea of growing something on your own. The plants look so splendid, after all, that how could you resist? For my part, I simply couldn't!

Of course, reading a flower and garden magazine, or going to a flower festival, is one thing. Starting one on your own is another. The flower and garden magazines make it look so easy, but it is not easy! Actually, I forgot how hard it was. I remember the way that my flowers looked when they were in full bloom, but I do not remember the amount of work that went into them. Having a few scattered flowers and tomatoes is one thing, but having a neatly groomed garden is another. I had such unrealistic expectation from the flowers and gardens show that disappointment was inevitable. Nonetheless, after a few years I did have an impressive flower and Garden display. I was growing plants from all over the world!
Flowers have a romantic history, with their honey sweet aromas, silky soft textures and cheerful appearance. The Dahlia flower is one of the the most enchanting and elegant of all flowers. The name itself conveys an image of mystique. One theory of the origin of the word “Dahlia” suggests a beginning in Eastern cultures. The “Dah” sound is remarkably similar to many Hindu Indian words. In the Hindu language, this part of the name signifies a certain godly essence, while the “lia” indicates an effeminate quality, an apt portrayal of the flowers' gentle beauty. With these two combined, it's likely that the word Dahlia means, roughly, “strong divine feminine”.

With over 1800 varieties, the Dahlia flower is among the most easily recognized kinds in the world. So special and important was the Dahlia flower in the horticultural circles, that an international conference was held to determine what is, and what is not, a Dahlia flower.

In 1962, at the International Horticultural Congress in Brussels, a conference was held to determine what could be classified as a Dahlia flower. Color and shape were out of the question, as those descriptors were both open to interpretation. Instead, it was decided that the center disk must be double, and not visible. The disk could either be curling inwards, outwards, or both.

What makes the Dahlia flower unique is the fact that it consists of two (or more) flowers within one. That may sound confusing, but let us describe this lovely piece of nature's art. In the single layer Dahlias, the flowers spring forth from a central disk, with the tips either perfectly rounded, or sharply pointed. Some varieties have each individual petal divided into up to six sections.

The Anemone flowered Dahlia is a wonder of mother earth. While the central disk does indeed exist, it is not visible, due to the enormous number of petals embedded within. These are classified as a “Fancy Flower”, as they are indeed, quite elegant.

One of the most attractive Dahlia flowers is known as the Ball Dahlia. The name does not do it justice. The flower is large and honey comb like. With eleven layers of petals, each layer piled on top of another, the overall design is a spiral shape, which tapers towards the top of the Dahlia flower.

So entrancing are these flowers that films have been named after them, and authors have written about them. Most recently, the big-screen adaption of “The Black Dahlia Murders” was released. An indie film, called “The Black Dahlia” is currently in production. The plot centers around the enchanting beauty and fragility of the Dahlia flower, and was written by, and stars, the world renowned guitarist, Gidget Gein.

This goes to show just how amazing this flower is, with an international conference held to study and define it, and with the admiration of a rock legend.

I was in a state of panic. It is natural to be in a panic before a wedding. After all, it was the most important day of my daughter's life, and one of the most important days of mine. I just needed to have everything right. I needed to know that everything was arranged perfectly. Of course, I knew I was being irrational. It is almost natural to be irrational before such a gala occasion. Nevertheless, I couldn't help myself. My husband told me to calm down, but it did no good. And then the bad news struck.

It seems that the florist had messed up the flower arrangement. It is not like we hadn't given him careful instructions. I know that flower arrangements for weddings are among the most important decorative elements. They were the last thing that we picked out, and meant to reflect all the other elements. Flower arrangements for weddings, you see, do not stand alone. They have to reflect the bridesmaid dresses, the bridal gown, and the decorations of the room. Everything has to be taken into account or else nothing will look right. I had worried that the flower arrangements for weddings would not look right, but it did not even occur to me that the florist would screw up the order. I figured that it might look different once we got into the room and not reflect the other elements of the décor the way that I wished. But when he screwed up at the last minute, it was more than I could take.

It wasn't like the flower arrangements for the wedding were slightly off. They were plain old wrong. If the flower arrangements for weddings had been, say, a lighter shade of purple instead of the dark purple that I had chosen, it would have been alright. As it was, they were completely different. I assume that he mixed them up with some other flower arrangements for weddings ordered by some other wedding party. They were probably having the same nervous breakdown that I was having right now. Instead of the dark violet floral bridal bouquet that we had desired, we are presented with a series of Calla lily arrangements. I think that calla lilies make great flower arrangements for weddings, but they didn't go along with anything. They clashed horribly. All the guests were polite about it, but I can't believe that no one noticed!
