Size wise as below:
png < gif < jpg

and colour wise png supports all colour while gif and jpg supports 256 and 16 bit colour.

In order for using on web

.png - is an improved version of gif and is lighter in size.
.gif - was the image format used earlier on website, now is generally used for animated images.
.jpeg - high quality images, heavy on size, not recommended for websites!

have to disagree there

.png - is largest in size also keeps transparency
.gif - smallest
.jpeg - middle size

why is JPG/JPEG not recommended for websites?

Personally I wouldn't recommend gif as it freaks the colors out on most things.

Yeah i was trying to say the same but PNG are the best format for web. Even they occupy more space or not.

even I would not recommend .gif, I said earlier (prior to png) we used to have gifs used most of the places on the web, since it supports transparency, but as said.. it reduced the color quality of the image...

and I personally feel that jpegs are more on size as compared to png.

I noticed that this is not the first time you expressed your dislike in using png.

The following is a snippet from yahoo developer best practices.

Try converting GIFs to PNGs and see if there is a saving. More often than not, there is. Developers often hesitate to use PNGs due to the limited support in browsers, but this is now a thing of the past. The only real problem is alpha-transparency in true color PNGs, but then again, GIFs are not true color and don't support variable transparency either. So anything a GIF can do, a palette PNG (PNG8) can do too (except for animations).
