A Windows Server is basically just like Windows 7, Vista, or Windows XP you have on a computer except the Windows Server is specially designed for server environments with needed applications. Windows Server is generally used for ASP.NET applications and game servers.

Linux servers are used for PHP. Windows Servers are generally used for ASP.NET sites.

You CAN use a windows server for PHP stuff, but the only advantage of doing so would be if you REALLY, REALLY wanted windows remote desktop. If it helps, they have something similar for linux, it's called VNC.
