I don't know whether SSL protects from DDOS or not (most probably not).

SSL don`t protect you from DDoS Attack, it only encript your data.
DDoS Protected server can protect you from DDoS attack, and firewall.

You cannot protect a site from DDoS attacks. You need to protect the network on the server.
One of the best solutions to keep the DDoS attacks under control is to have a Cisco Guard on the server.
Cisco Guard is a hardware specially designed to control DDoS attacks. You may find more info about Cisco Guard at
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/vpndevc/ps5879/ps6264/ps5888/product_data_sheet0900aecd8055d170.html

The Cisco® Guard XT 5650-B DDoS Mitigation Appliance from Cisco Systems® delivers a powerful and extensive distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) protection system. Designed to meet the performance and scalability requirements of the largest and most demanding enterprise environments, the Cisco Guard XT provides unprecedented levels of protection against today's increasingly complex and elusive attacks.
Most data center providers offer Cisco Guard to be placed on the server for free during the period of attack.
Contact your hosting provider and ask them to place a Cisco Guard on the server.

Correct. A DDoS attack is a distributed denial of service attack that sends large amounts of traffic to the website (server) and overloads the network connectivity on the server, as well as consumes large amounts of resources (CPU & RAM) that may result in server crash/downtime.
A Cisco Guard will filter the traffic and keep the DDoS attack under control from reaching the server.

Most data center providers will place a Cisco Guard on the server for 24 hours or more to keep the DDoS attack under control that is affecting the website. So you do not have to worry about paying for it.
Cisco Guard is not a cheap hardware and data centers will not place the Cisco Guard on the server for a long period of time. If you are looking to have a Cisco Guard on the server every day, you are looking at around $2,000 a month of more to have the Cisco Guard on the server for full time.
DDoS protection is not cheap.
Data center providers should help you control the attack if they have the hardware to do so.
