This is also 'zero frame'.
It is the way of loading/hiding a website without having to show it on the screen, it means that the site is loaded directly into browser's memory and not displaying it.

It is used to take advantage of the sites that pay you to promote their site. As already suggested, it is a form of cheating since the owner of the site is not getting anyone seeing their site but they are paying the user for the hit to the site. The sneaky part is putting the code on your own site so that you can increase your  pay to promote hits and generate some cash from the paying PTP site while promoting your own site.

Also, a paying site with PTP usually restricts or excludes valid hits to an individual ip address or blocks of ip's. The unfortunate problem is many existing scripts rely on an honor system if they have not modified their own script and as you may be learning many people do not follow such an honor system.

To a dishonest person, stealing is only stealing if you get caught.
